Trump and Netanyahu Steer Toward an Ugly World, Together
Renowned American author Thomas Friedman said that US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are engaged in creating a "post-America" and "post-Israel" world.
With Trump’s Return, Netanyahu Faces Fewer Restraints on Gaza Than Ever
In an opinion piece published in The New York Times, Thomas Friedman said that Netanyahu is waging a campaign aimed at "undermining the authority of Israel's Supreme Court to review the decisions of the executive and legislative branches."
Is Netanyahu prolonging the Gaza war to cling to power?
"Netanyahu's goal today is to dismantle all the basic components of democracy," one Israeli official wrote.
How the Israel-Gaza war could end - if Netanyahu wants it to
He continued, "Netanyahu himself is on trial on corruption charges. The Israeli opposition—along with a number of the hostages' relatives—accuses him of prolonging the war in Gaza to appease the Jewish extremists who keep him in power and possibly spare him from prison."
He explained that "the prolongation of the war also delays the formation of any commission of inquiry into this disastrous war, which broke out during his term for reasons directly attributable to the failure of his policies."
Friedman asserted that Netanyahu "feels—like Trump and thanks to him—that he is above accountability, and that nothing can bring him down."
He continued: "This pattern of thinking trickles down and leads to incidents like the one last month, when Israeli forces killed 15 paramedics and rescue workers in southern Gaza, an incident about which a senior Israeli military officer told Haaretz that "the chain of command simply lied."
He pointed out that what is happening in Israel and America is not just a passing political crisis, but a fundamental shift in the identity of the two countries.
